What Does “AMG®” Stand for?

The brand name AMG® contains the initials of the automotive engineers at Daimler-Benz in the 1960s who developed racing engines in their spare time: Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher. The G stands for Großβaspach, the city where they developed an engine that, in 1965, debuted at the German Touring Car Championship, where it proceeded to win ten times. Since then, AMG® has designated Mercedes-Benz engines with the power and performance capabilities for the racing circuit.
